Religious Studies
The department will try to assign an available research assistant to you. However, since this is a service requirement directly tied to the student’s Divinity School funded stipend, the student’s compensation would need to be charged to your research center number in A&S.
While specific assignments cannot be guaranteed, we’ll make every effort to accommodate specific requests.

RA Guidelines
1) A GDR assigned research assistant is limited to only ten hours per week during the two semesters, fall and spring. They are not expected to do any work during the breaks unless the research assistant agrees with the faculty that they are doing so as a substitute for some of the hours during term. The research assistants will keep a log of their hours, the work done, and the faculty member whom they assisted. They will receive their full stipend even if they are not asked to work the full number of hours.
2) The school does not expect the research assistant to work off an accumulation of unworked hours, which could become an unnecessary burden on them. Furthermore, we ask that the research assistant avoid logging hours ahead. The best practice all around is to hold to a steady pace of ten hours of work per week.
3) Appropriate kinds of work include proof-reading, library research, and other tasks associated with research. They should not be asked to baby-sit, feed dogs, or run to the grocery store - all tasks that I've heard faculty at other universities ask of their assistants. You also shouldn't have to do secretarial-type work since there's a faculty assistant on staff for that. Due to FERPA regulations, the research assistants should not be asked to grade papers, lead discussion groups, or lecture a course since there are teaching assistants for that. And unlike the teaching assistants, research assistants are not required to take the mandatory FERPA training or attend the Teaching Assistant Orientation through the GDR and Center for Teaching.
4) The department recommends that the research assistants take assignments on a first-come/first-served basis, and any exception should be negotiated among the faculty.
