According to the Metropolitan Nashville Fire Prevention Code (section 1.12 & 10.11): Where burning is
allowed in accordance with the Metro Fire Prevention Code, the following guidelines must be followed:
NOTE: Open burning, such as recreational fires or Bonfires, is not allowed on Vanderbilt University property. Only
outdoor fireplaces/fire pits in approved containment are allowed if all listed guidelines are followed.
1) Do not burn any tar paper, roofing, construction material, trash or heavy timbers. Use of liquid accelerants is prohibited (i.e. gasoline, lighter fluid).
2) Do not burn when wind velocity is 15 miles per hour or greater.
3) A responsible person shall attend the fire at all times.
4) Contained outdoor fireplaces/fire pits shall be located no closer than 15 feet from any structure or combustible
materials (International Fire Code 2015 307.4.3)
5) Any conditions that could cause a fire to spread to within 15 feet of a structure shall be eliminated.
6) Burning hours shall be approved by Vanderbilt University Public Safety.
7) Keep fire under control at all times.
8) Provide means to extinguish the fire (i.e. water, ice, extinguisher).
9) Make sure fire is completely out before leaving.
10) Approval for burning is subject to withdrawal if rules and regulations are violated or if weather conditions are
unfavorable.
