Description: This session will focus on team building and working within interdisciplinary dynamics to achieve different academic outcomes. This will be an interactive session that includes exercises to demonstrate the inherent conflict and cooperation among groups and teams and explore effective strategies for maximizing team outcomes.
IMPACT Faculty Leadership Development Workshop: “Navigating Difficult Conversations/Engaging Mediation Skills”

Description: Effective leadership in academic contexts requires excellent conflict resolution skills. This session will focus on understanding conflict at work and will include role playing of actual identified issues and examining how individual styles of handling conflict affect personal and group dynamics. Will also explore how to engage others in conversations and mediate dialogues in order to effectively handle situations and engage in problem solving for more effective department/team dynamics.

Description: Effective feedback gives individuals new insight into their own work and helps ensure alignment of that work with the larger mission and needs of one’s department, school and institution. Feedback is also key in the mentoring relationship as a tool for improvement, resilience, and empowerment. Participants will explore new ways of conceptualizing feedback as a practice, explore new concepts and apply and engage in interactive techniques and skills.

Description: Three keys to being a more effective leader are 1) knowing your strengths and investing in others' strengths, 2) getting people with the right strengths on your team, and 3) understanding and meeting the basic needs of those who look to you for leadership. This session will stimulate an introspective examination of your personal temperament and assets and explore the relevance of individual styles and their impact on management and professional navigation in an academic context.
Navigating Relationships, Conflict, and Power in Academia

Description: Achieving organizational objectives as an academic requires a balance of managing relationships and conflict while understanding power and influence. At various levels within the academy as well as within the university, there are status hierarchies, involving the exerting of influence in interpersonal encounters, exchanges, and meetings. At the same time, fundamental to any and every exchange are the relationships that must be cultivated, connections that must be made, and oftentimes, conflicts that must be mitigated or managed. This session will explore relationship and conflict situations, and how to approach and handled these intentionally and constructively. We will also discuss how power and status impacts individuals’ ability to get things done in organizations. This topic will be explored through interactive exercises and engaging techniques.

Description: The mentoring relationship requires participation by both those mentoring and those needing mentorship. This session will focus on giving guidance to those seeking skills and strategies for engaging mentorship. Do you have a reliable and strong network of mentors? Are you struggling to cultivate mentoring relationships? Do you know the difference between a mentor and a sponsor? Are you moving to a new stage of your career and wondering how to find new mentors and sponsors that are appropriate to the next level? In this workshop, participants will examine their current mentoring network and engage in tangible strategies and skills for enhancing networking skills.
